Augmented reality (AR) adds digital information to a person’s view or perception of the physical environment. Head-up displays can present text, diagrams, and status information without requiring a separate handheld screen. Optical see-through and camera-based video see-through are distinct approaches.
Underwater Display Research
Research prototypes have investigated underwater head-mounted displays. A Technical University of Munich publication describes a commercial-diving prototype using a camera and a protected video see-through display. A lightweight snorkeling mask that receives live internet information and identifies marine life would require its own design and validation.
Questions to Investigate
- How can labels remain readable in sunlight, glare, and changing underwater visibility?
- How can a display avoid obscuring real hazards?
- How might a mask connect to electronics mounted at an exposed snorkel tip?
- What should the interface show when connectivity or identification confidence disappears?
