Marine Satellite Internet

Marine satellite internet connects vessels to data networks through satellite terminals. Equipment on the boat communicates with satellites; a separate local network can distribute that connection to other devices aboard or near the vessel.

What Exists

Satellite internet service for boats is already available. Systems differ in orbital arrangements, antenna designs, geographic coverage, and how they handle moving vessels. Starlink, for example, describes maritime connectivity and equipment intended for boats. This does not itself establish that an additional laser connection to a swimmer has been demonstrated.

Questions to Investigate

  • What equipment works on small recreational boats rather than large ships?
  • How do coverage, latency, weather, and service limitations change by location?
  • What electrical power do terminals and downstream communications equipment require?
  • How would a vessel share its internet connection with a separate short-range system?
